A pistol red dot generally allows faster, more accurate shooting at distance and is a significant advantage for shooters with aging eyes, but it requires real retraining and introduces a battery and a piece of electronics into your defensive system. Iron sights are simpler, cheaper, and never fail. For most carriers the honest answer is that either works — and neither substitutes for practice.
The Case for a Red Dot
One focal plane instead of three
With irons, your eye is asked to align a rear sight, a front sight, and a target that sit at three different distances. Human eyes cannot actually focus on all three; you learn to prioritize the front sight and accept blur elsewhere.
A red dot removes the problem. You look at the target, the dot appears on it, you press. One thing to focus on.
Aging eyes
This is the single biggest argument, and it is not close. Around forty, most people's near focus degrades and a crisp front sight becomes genuinely hard to see. A dot is projected at optical infinity and stays sharp regardless. Plenty of shooters switch for this reason alone.
Accuracy at distance
At longer distances the precision advantage is real and measurable.
Target focus
Under stress people look at the threat, not at their sights — this is hardwired. A red dot works with that instinct rather than against it.
The Case for Iron Sights
They cannot fail
No battery, no electronics, no window to fog or occlude. Iron sights work wet, dusty, dropped, and cold.
Cost
A quality red dot plus proper slide milling plus suppressor-height backup irons is a meaningful expense. That money spent on ammunition and training would improve most shooters more than the optic will.
The learning curve is real
This is what people under-sell. New red dot shooters routinely cannot find the dot on the draw. If your presentation is not consistent, the dot is simply not in the window and you are hunting for it — which is slower than irons, not faster.
Fixing that takes deliberate dry practice. Not a weekend. Weeks.

If You Go Red Dot, Do It Properly
- Buy a reputable optic rated for pistol slide recoil — this is not the place to economize
- Have the slide professionally milled, or buy an optics-ready pistol
- Install suppressor-height backup iron sights, co-witnessed
- Use a fresh battery and change it on a calendar schedule, not when it dies
- Loctite the mounting screws to the manufacturer's spec
- Dry practice your presentation until the dot is simply there every single time
- Train at distance — this is where the optic earns its cost
What Actually Matters More Than Either
Here is the part the internet argument always omits.
The difference between a red dot and iron sights is small compared to the difference between a shooter who trains and one who does not. A carrier with iron sights who practices monthly will outperform a carrier with a $600 optic who shoots twice a year, every time, without exception.
If you have a budget and a choice: spend it on training and ammunition first, optics second. If you are over forty and struggling to see your front sight, get the dot — that is a real problem an optic genuinely solves.
