Why Homestead Students Take This Course

South Dade is where the phrase "the police are minutes away" carries the most literal weight — properties are spread out and response times can be long. That does not change the fundamentals, but it does raise the stakes on having actually practiced them.

Homestead is where our outdoor live-fire range is, which means students here have essentially no drive at all to the training the rest of the county travels for.

South Dade is also its own environment — agricultural, spread out, with long response times in the parts furthest from town. That is precisely the situation our mission statement describes: when the police are minutes away, you are the first line of defense.

What the Course Covers

  • Storage that is secure from a child and still fast for you
  • Choosing a home defense firearm — pistol, carbine, or shotgun
  • Weapon-mounted lights and identifying your target
  • Shooting in low light and near-total darkness
  • Whether to move through the house or hold a defensive position
  • Communicating with family members and with 911
  • Working with a partner without covering each other
  • Florida law on the use of deadly force in the home
  • What happens in the hours after a defensive incident

Where This Happens

Live fire and low light — our outdoor Homestead range, right here — this is our home range from Homestead. More about the range.

Force-on-force — our Hialeah facility, Mondays 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, roughly a 50-minute drive north from Homestead. More about force-on-force.

Most students build the two together. Mechanical skill comes from the range; decision-making comes from facing a live opponent. Neither one substitutes for the other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do Homestead students take home defense training?
Live-fire and low-light work happen at our Homestead range (right here — this is our home range from Homestead); force-on-force runs at our Hialeah facility (roughly a 50-minute drive north).
How much is home defense training near Homestead?
From $60 depending on the track. Call 786-314-0471 for the next available date.
What is the best firearm for home defense?
It depends on your home layout, who else lives there, and what you can actually shoot well under stress. A pistol is easiest to store accessibly, a carbine is easier to shoot accurately, a shotgun hits hard but is harder to maneuver indoors.
Do I need a concealed carry permit to keep a gun at home?
No. A Florida CWL governs carrying concealed in public, not keeping a firearm lawfully in your own home.
How do I store a gun safely with kids in the house?
A quick-access safe — biometric or keypad — bolted down within reach of where you sleep. Secure against a child, open in a second or two for you. A loaded firearm in a nightstand drawer is not an option.
Should my spouse train too?
Yes, and we strongly recommend it. Home defense is a household plan, not an individual one.
