Why Doral Students Take This Course

A lot of Doral homes are townhouses and condos with shared walls, which changes the calculus considerably — what is behind your target may be a neighbour's bedroom. Knowing your target and what is beyond it stops being a slogan and becomes the central constraint.

Doral is a business district first — office parks, warehousing, logistics, and a large Venezuelan and Colombian community. The questions we get from Doral students reflect that: people working late in a half-empty office park, business owners carrying deposits, and families who want a plan at home.

A lot of our Doral students train in Spanish, and many book private sessions rather than fixed class times — the constraint there is almost never motivation, it is the calendar.

What the Course Covers

  • Storage that is secure from a child and still fast for you
  • Choosing a home defense firearm — pistol, carbine, or shotgun
  • Weapon-mounted lights and identifying your target
  • Shooting in low light and near-total darkness
  • Whether to move through the house or hold a defensive position
  • Communicating with family members and with 911
  • Working with a partner without covering each other
  • Florida law on the use of deadly force in the home
  • What happens in the hours after a defensive incident

Where and When

Homestead Training Center · Varies.

From Doral it is roughly a 50-minute drive south. Give yourself margin: classes start on time and the safety briefing is not something you can join halfway through.

We train outdoors deliberately. An outdoor range lets us teach drawing from a holster, moving between positions, shooting from behind cover, and working after dark — almost no indoor range in Miami-Dade permits any of it. More about the range.

Bring your own firearm and ammunition — we do not rent firearms. If you have not bought one yet, call before you book and we will talk through what to look for.

What to Bring

  • Your home defense firearm if you own one
  • A weapon light or hand-held light

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do Doral students take home defense training?
Training is held at the Homestead Training Center, roughly a 50-minute drive south from Doral.
How much is home defense training near Doral?
From $60 depending on the track. Call 786-314-0471 for the next available date.
What is the best firearm for home defense?
It depends on your home layout, who else lives there, and what you can actually shoot well under stress. A pistol is easiest to store accessibly, a carbine is easier to shoot accurately, a shotgun hits hard but is harder to maneuver indoors.
Do I need to bring my own firearm?
Yes. Every student supplies their own firearm and ammunition — we do not rent firearms.
How do I store a gun safely with kids in the house?
A quick-access safe — biometric or keypad — bolted down within reach of where you sleep. Secure against a child, open in a second or two for you. A loaded firearm in a nightstand drawer is not an option.
Should my spouse train too?
Yes, and we strongly recommend it. Home defense is a household plan, not an individual one.
